This is the summary of learning how to learn course in Coursera: https://www.coursera.org/learn/learning-how-to-learn
Week 1
There are fundamentally 2 difference modes of thinking:
- Diffused mode
- Broad ranging ways of thinking
- Accessible in resting state
- Performed below the conscious level
- Widely spaced
- Focused mode
- Associated with prefrontal cortex
- Performed with high concentration
Since both modes of thinking are important, use promodoro technique: 25 mins of work with some break
There are 2 main types of memory:
- Working Memory: Only has 4 slots, so we can only work on 4 things at a time
- Long Term Memory: Like a warehouse, stores everything
There are 2 main types of learning:
- Cramming
- Spaced Learning
Since our aim is to store all the memory in long term memory, we should avoid cramming.
Sleep helps to remove all the toxins from the brain, so its important to sleep.
Exercise also helps improve learning ability
Week 2
- Chunking
- Chunks are pieces of information neuroscientifically speaking bound through use and meaning (i.e. similar meaning words are stored within a chunk)
- Chunks can get bigger when you become an expert in an area
- Chunks can fit into the working memory
Chunks are best built with:
- Focused attention
- Understanding of basic idea
- Practice to deepen the idea and understand the bigger picture
Recall is the best way to create chunks
Chunks support transfer — i.e. it can be transferred from one area you learnt into another which share surprising commonalities
- Interleaving
Practice different concept, approach and technique all in one session
- Illusion of competence
Sometimes you can have an illusion of learning, so:
- Test yourself often
- Avoid over highlighting in text
- Make mistakes
- Deliberately practice what you find more difficult
- Einstellung
An idea you already had in mind, a pattern you had already developed, prevents a better idea or solution
- Law of serendipity
Lady luck favors the one who tries
